The 2020 VMA’s Get A New Look

It’s no secret 2020 has thrown everyone for a loop, with events like the Met Gala, Olympics and school years being postponed. It’s no surprise award shows followed suit. However, the VMA’s, also known as the MTV Video Music Awards, is scheduled for Sunday, August 30, and is said to be one of the first large gatherings since the COVID outbreak began in March.

While New York state currently has a mandatory 14-day quarantine in place for out of state travelers, it was announced late last week that stars arriving for the VMA’s will not be required to follow suit. The VMA’s applied through the New York State Department of Health to allow out of state guests to participate in the show’s production. The DOH granted them the rights with the same methodology as they do professional athletes.

When not performing, stars will be required to quarantine, wear a mask at all times (with the exception of being on camera) and adhere to social distancing measures. Many will also undergo rigorous testing. MTV claims “the health and safety of our employees and partners is of the utmost importance.” And while all of that sounds nice, it’s left others wondering “why the exception for them” and not us?

Although New York is allowing performers to come and stay, several have backed out due to battling coronavirus themselves, like J Balvin. After all, many celebrities will be coming from California, a state that is struggling to contain their numbers in recent weeks.

MTV also announced a change in venues. Whereas the event is usually held indoors, MTV ultimately decided exploring various outdoor venues would allow greater social distancing measures and an overall safer environment.

While some are wondering whether or not Lady Gaga or Ariana Grande will be taking home the most awards, (the two are currently tied for most nominations), others are wondering who will be deemed best dressed solely based off of their face mask of choice. This award season is sure to look different but one thing’s for sure, it’s sure to be a hit!
