Healthy College Eating


Being an on-the-go college student often makes healthy eating hard to plan for. Eating right is part of being an independent college student, which is what many of us are striving to be.

Pinterest makes for a great source of ideas for almost anything, including healthy eating. There are a number of articles on the app/website which can offer information on living a healthy lifestyle in college and in general.

One article which outlines some good habits for eating healthy while in college is How to Eat Well in College with a Busy Schedule by Gina Alyse.

The first piece of advice offered by Alyse is to set up a breakfast routine. This is a very important aspect of healthy living and is too often overlooked by college students. This is understandable though, considering people are trying get as much sleep as possible before heading to class. So with the hustle and bustle of school, setting a breakfast routine that is quick and efficient is key.

The author suggests having oatmeal mixed with almond butter topped with cinnamon and fruit. In the interest of speed and efficiency, a good way to try this idea is to put the recipe together with instant oatmeal in a cup. Also, consider buying disposable cups to avoid having to carry one around and wash at the end of the day.

As far as eating the rest of the day, Alyse mentions keeping fruit around at home as well as water throughout the day. Fruit can help satisfy sugary cravings and water is much healthier than soda and energy drinks; granola and protein bars are great choices, too.

Coffee is not a bad choice as a pick me up, but there is some debate as to the legitimate benefits the drink offers. Remember, eating healthy can be a challenge sometimes, but the pursuit is worth it and as billionaire investor Warren Buffett says, “chains of habit are too light to be felt until they are to heavy to be broken.”
