Second semester is in full swing, and with it comes dropping temperatures, sharp winds and falling snow—not exactly the ideal conditions for putting together an on-trend look. The weather will have us reaching for jackets, and as the final layer to an outfit, they have the power to completely make or break a look. Finding a jacket to keep us warm in the dead of winter can often mean sacrificing style, but it doesn’t have to. Enter: the teddy coat.

Dani Bennett, one of A Magazine’s head stylists, says she’s into the “cozy, relaxed fit” of teddy coats because “they provide both texture and warmth to any winter outfit.”

From Forever 21 to Urban Outfitters and Zara, these cozy jackets are popping up everywhere, making it easy to find the perfect one for you. Although the classic style is an oversized, soft brown jacket, it’s easy to find cropped and black or white versions, and even colorful takes on the style.

To style it, look to street style stars like Alexa Chung and Bella Hadid, who seem to be loving the teddy coat. They’re often spotted wearing all black ensembles underneath of theirs. Sticking to a neutral, monochromatic palette puts the teddy coat on full display and gives an air of sophistication.

For a simple take on this, try pairing black ankle booties, black skinny jeans and a black sweater. Feeling a little edgy? Black on black looks don’t have to be boring; try leather leggings and a vintage graphic T-shirt. The mix of textures—fur, leather and a perfectly worn in tee—adds interest, making an eye-catching outfit.

Although celebrities are frequently wear their teddy coats with black pieces, that’s not the only way to style them. For a more colorful look, Bennett suggests layering a bright turtleneck underneath and says the tan color of the coat will go with almost anything.

For a comfy and casual everyday look, try pairing light wash boyfriend jeans and an off-white sweater with your coat. The denim and off-white shades paired with the soft brown of the coat is a classic color combination. With loose jeans and a cozy jacket, you’ll be just as comfortable as you would be in sweats, but look more on trend. Finish it off with a pair of bright white sneakers for a fashion forward yet practical look.

The teddy coat looks just as good on men, too. Harry Styles has worn them with everything from T-shirts or sweatshirts to his signature floral button up shirts. As with women, the coat looks best when paired with other neutral pieces. Throw on a great boot, your favorite jeans and then have fun experimenting with a variety of tops to layer under the jacket.

The teddy coat is versatile as it is cozy, making it the perfect piece to stay stylish and warm this winter.
