2024 has been an unforgettable year of bold fashion and unusual trends. With corsets making an unforeseen rise and vibrant, striking sets making a comeback, this year captured the essence of modern-day fashion.
As celebrity stylists raced to outdo their former creations, they produced even more unique fashion for fans to gawk at. Out of all the memorable designs this year, the following list shows some of the most praised and talked about looks.
- Kim Kardashian’s corset and cardigan
At the 2024 Met Gala, there was no shortage of outrageous fashion. One of the most talked-about outfits of the night was Kim Kardashian’s silver corset dress with a seemingly out-of-place, tiny cardigan layered on top.
This year’s Met Gala theme was “The Garden of Time,” which used nature as a metaphor for rebirth, renewal and the impermanence of fashion. In an interview with Vogue, Kardashian shared the story behind her look and the reason for the controversial addition to her gown.
“This is like the wildest night of my life in a garden, and I just ran out and grabbed my boyfriend’s sweater and threw it on and had to get to work,” Kardashian said.
- Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter bodysuit
When Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter album came out in March, her look on the album cover personified her dramatic switch to country. Beyoncé donned patriotic latex and a cowboy hat as she rode a white horse, holding the American flag. The white horse is reminiscent of her Renaissance album cover, where she rode on top of a clear, futuristic horse.
The latex look was designed by Mariano Cortez, the creator of the latex and lingerie label Bustedbrand. The most standout aspects of this piece include the latex chaps and Paris Texas boots.
- Zendaya dressed by Law Roach
Since first collaborating in 2011, Zendaya has successfully worked with her longtime stylist, Law Roach, to become a fixture on best-dressed lists over the past decade. For this year’s Met Gala look, Roach styled Zendaya in a Maison Margiela Artisanal by John Galliano gown to embody “The Garden of Time” theme.
The intricate florals and rich blue and green hues demanded guests’ attention as she connected to nature’s beauty. In an article for Vogue, writer Christian Allaire described Zendaya as “reminiscent of the ocean” and “just as refreshing as a summer-day dip.”
- Sabrina Carpenter in vintage Bob Mackie
At this year’s 2024 VMAs, no one made more headlines than Sabrina Carpenter. She wore a sequined white gown and a dark red lip. This look was familiar to some, as Madonna wore the same gown in 1991.
The dress, designed by Bob Mackie, was paired with Carpenter’s signature voluminous curls. Paying tribute to vintage fashion while adding her own take on the look, Carpenter made news for the iconic look.
- Chappell Roan as a human butterfly
After Chappell Roan performed at Coachella in April, her music spread rapidly across mainstream media as videos of her set were shared. Of her two Coachella looks, the butterfly costume was arguably the most unforgettable.
The all-pink look was complete with rhinestones, frills and, of course, a set of gigantic wings. Her makeup was purposeful in supporting the look, with butterfly eye-makeup and antenna eyebrows.
Her vibrant on-stage costumes and drag-inspired makeup have continued to shock audiences and spark conversations throughout the rest of 2024, including her Statue of Liberty-inspired look and medieval chainmail dress. As her outfits continue to impress with shock value, fans can expect her to continue making fashion headlines in 2024.
