One of the first things I noticed after starting my semester abroad in Italy was the difference in how Italians dress from Americans. Italy and America have two distinct approaches to style, and both are influenced by the lifestyle and culture of their country.
Italy emerged as a fashion capital after World War II, wanting to create unique fashions different from Paris. Italian fashion is built on a long history of artisan excellence, quality and craftsmanship, especially in leather goods and textiles. Italian fashion appears effortlessly put together with a timeless style, embracing classic silhouettes and quality products.
Italians have the idea of “La Bella Figura” which translates to “the beautiful figure.” It is the idea to dress well and to make a good impression. Whether they are just getting a cappuccino at a café, going out to eat with friends or going to a formal event, Italians always want to look their best. Italians dress for the season instead of the weather. Even if it is 65 degrees in November, you will see Italians bundled up in coats and scarves. Italians also have a more neutral color palette, such as beiges, whites and blacks. They incorporate a statement piece whether it be a pop of color, a leather bag or statement jewelry. Italians also wear items that are more fitting and flattering on the body, focusing on tailoring and well-constructed garments. They prioritize investing in well-made, quality pieces. They embrace individuality, sophistication and timeless elegance.
Brands like Gucci and Ferragamo have contributed to making Italy a part of the global fashion industry. Gucci was born out of post-war Italy where materials were in short supply. The company used innovative techniques and Italian materials to create high quality, luxury pieces that align with Italian values of craftsmanship and quality. Salvatore Ferragamo took inspiration from Italian culture, incorporating traditions of craftsmanship and Italian art into his innovative designs. He utilized Italy’s artisans to create shoes that were comfortable and stylish.
Americans developed a completely different style from the elegant haute couture styles of Europe. American style is more casual, leaning towards practicality and versatility. American designers offer clothing that can be mixed and matched, allowing the wearer to create unique looks. Sportswear became a staple in American wardrobes, designed to cater to the fast-paced lifestyles of Americans. Designers incorporate fabrics such as cotton, jersey and denim to create more casual and comfortable clothing.
In contrast to the Italian style, American fashion favors a relaxed fit, allowing for movement and comfort. In Italy, it is very rare to see someone wearing leggings, or a sweatshirt and sweatpants, unless they are going to the gym. In America, this is seen as everyday wear. American fashion incorporates oversized silhouettes and layering. American fashion also incorporates bold colors and prints, differing from the more neutral Italian palette. Americans prioritize self-expression and comfort in the way they dress.
Brands like Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger capture the American spirit in their designs. Ralph Lauren integrates the idea of the “American Dream” into his designs, creating quality and timeless pieces. Tommy Hilfiger takes inspiration from fashion, art, music and entertainment as well as American heritage. He fuses pop culture and the preppy East Coast style to create a uniquely American style.
Italy and America have contrasting perspectives on style that are shaped by lifestyles and values. Italian fashion places emphasis on elegance and quality, having a refined aesthetic inspired by cultural elements. American fashion prioritizes comfort and practicality, having a more casual approach to fashion.
