Unique and non-serious approaches to celebrity interactions are becoming increasingly popular. Whether it’s Harry Daniels singing to stars or podcasts like Hot Ones, where celebs are interviewed while eating progressively hotter wings, today’s generation values relatability and authenticity.
Amelia Dimoldenberg has mastered the art of nonsensical interviewing with her viral series Chicken Shop Date on YouTube. In her show, the 30-year-old comedian sits down and flirtatiously chats with celebrities in fried chicken restaurants.
A journalism graduate from London’s Central Saint Martins, Dimoldenberg always dreamed of working for a top fashion magazine and loved thinking about journalism through a creative lens. “In a way, it taught me what I didn’t want to do. It helped me realize that I am a creative person but not in the fine art sense, or design for that matter; I’m much more about ideas,” she said in an interview with University of the Arts London.
Dimoldenberg’s show is self-produced and began as a column for youth magazine The Cut in 2014. Today, her YouTube channel has 2.8 million followers and she has interviewed stars like Sabrina Carpenter, Billie Eilish, Sza, Phoebe Bridgers and many more. More recently, she interviewed Andrew Garfield, and fans have been beside themselves at Dimoldenberg and Garfield’s chemistry.
The format of her show is date-style, late-night chats where Dimoldenberg subjects celebrities to her sarcastic, deadpan and awkward sense of humor. She asks them random questions, and her unique style of interviewing has resulted in many viral moments.
Her “dates” take place in a chicken shop because “you would never take someone there seriously on a date, which is why it’s the best place to go on a date,” she said.
The popularity of Dimoldenberg’s show can be attributed to her non-serious approach to interviewing. She commits to the bit, and her quirky premise is playful, laid-back and untraditional. She creates an awkward chemistry, and we get to see a behind-the-scenes look into the personalities of different celebrities.
Dimoldenberg has explained that her dream interview guest is Drake, who she hopes to interview before she closes down shop. She has voiced that she knows Chicken Shop Date can’t go on forever, and hopes to expand her digital production company Dimz Inc., and also sees a future for herself in presenting.
Already, Dimoldenberg has worked the red carpet for events like the Oscars and movie premieres. She is also a social media ambassador for brands and has appeared in campaigns, such as with Charlotte Tilbury.
Amelia Dimoldenberg is just getting started, and she is sure to interview many more celebrities and create more unique and creative projects.
