For the past few decades the notorious combination of jeans and a going out top has been a staple for girls across America when it comes to nightlife looks. Whether it was low-rise jeans and a cowl neck top in the ‘90s or jeggings and a business casual blouse in the ‘2010s, we basically only had to ever worry about the top half of our outfits, and it’s getting boring. Although we might be used to the tradition of wearing going out tops, we have to move on and embrace a new style.
On the bright side, it seems like things are finally taking a turn in the fashion world—cue micro shorts. The chicest look for a night out can be as simple as a t-shirt and a pair of your tiniest statement shorts. Not only is it way more comfortable than a tight top hugging all the wrong places, it’s also more fun.
The emergence of this trend might just have something to do with the overall revival of early 2000s fashion. Although it is true that not many— if any— night out outfits from then included micro shorts, 2000s fashion was greatly influenced by the ‘70s. Flared pants, vibrant prints, metallics and hot pants, which is vintage for micro shorts.
These bottoms are coming to steal the show after the mini skirt phenomenon. However, for some reason, twenty years ago fashionable gals opted for skirts during the evening and it took another twenty years or so to finally bring back the iconic pants left behind in the ‘70s.
Many critics of the y2k fashion comeback talk about how uncomfortable low-rise bottoms are, but the good thing about micro shorts is you can rock them as high or as low as you wish without taking away from how incredible they look.
Vogue has curated the Ultimate Short Shorts Outfit Guide, which assures a stunning look for any occasion. Nevertheless, try to not compromise on the length. As Cosmopolitan writers Clementia Jackson and Alexandra Dale said, “the shorter the better, obvs.”
Micro shorts make any top sexy and classy. During the colder months, it is safe to say that us fashionistas don’t compromise warmth for fashion. All the cool guys and gals will be seen freezing during a night out because going out tops tend to skimp on the fabric, and even though we wouldn’t dare to wear a sweatshirt instead, we can’t help but wish we’d be wearing a thicker layer (especially during this year’s long winter— thank you, Punxsutawney Phil).
Lucky for us, there’s nothing more fabulous to wear than some tights and boots with a basic cozy turtleneck and your favorite pair of micro shorts, which you can find with fashion influencer Hannah Khrone’s help, as she curates lists of places to shop for the perfect pair .
This past August, British Cosmopolitan compiled pictures of different celebrity micro shorts looks that can help you to find the right style for you. These range from Hailey Biebers’ iconic, bikini-sized black micro shorts to Sophie Turners’ high-rise lace, cotton ones. No matter what aesthetic you want to go for, these shorts are for you! So, what are you waiting for?
