Each September, Fall comes around and suddenly everyone is watching “Gilmore Girls” again, loving the colors orange and red, and really embracing Fall fashion. Classic shows like “Gilmore Girls,” “Friends,” and “Sex and the City” have become unofficial guides to iconic Fall styles, each offering its own take on layering, texture and comfort. Although “Gilmore Girls” may have the best Fall feels, that does not mean they all do not have an amazing sense of style while each representing a different era and aesthetic.
Rory, from “Gilmore Girls”, has a very cozy, modest fall style. She loves to go for a big chunky sweater and some baggy jeans but also loves a classic babydoll long sleeve. Rory has a very casual but classic style in most episodes; some may even label it timelessly feminine. It really plays into her bookish, small-town vibe.
Rory’s style of tighter long sleeve tops and babydoll tops has become much more relevant and trendy recently. The clothing brand Hollister recently released a throwback “Y2K” collection that included tops similar to the ones Rory often wears. It has items like cable knit V-neck sweaters, square neck long-sleeve babydoll sweaters and long-sleeve quarter button henley tops. These items are no longer rare thrift finds but something easily purchased online or at a mall. They have recently become much more attainable and very similar to Rory’s style in “Gilmore Girls,” like something straight out of Stars Hollow.
Lorelai, Rory’s mom, is often seen layering something along the lines of a turtleneck with a leather jacket or jean jacket. She is also normally wearing jeans with a slight flare and some little brown heeled boots. Her outfits are definitely more structured, reflecting her confident and fun personality. While Rory leans into the coziness of fall, Lorelai leans into its versatility, playing with texture, color and shape to keep her style dynamic.
The style queen herself, Rachel Green, also has an amazing Fall style that consistently appears in “Friends.” Similar to Lorelai, Rachel is into layering. She is often seen wearing a small black mini skirt with a button up layered with a sweater.
Arguably one of the most stylish characters in TV history, Rachel’s Fall outfits are a masterclass in layering and proportion. She often plays with different textures and fabrics such as wool, leather and tweed, all while keeping everything she wears fitted and flattering. Her 90s style combining professionalism and minimalism still reigns popular today.
Where Rachel might opt for mini skirts and darker layered turtlenecks, Charlotte York embraces a softer, more traditional elegance that feels timeless and tailored for Fall. “Sex and the City” often represents bold high fashion, but Charlotte brings a more refined, quiet luxury to the group. She leans into lighter Fall colors such as taupe and soft blush pink, but also sometimes a deep burgundy. Charlotte embraces grace and tradition in her outfits with chic cashmere cardigans, tailored coats and A-line skirts. She almost perfectly represents the “quiet luxury” trend that women on TikTok are trying so hard to achieve.
All of these iconic characters dress not only with style, but intention. Their thoughtful Fall styling remains relevant and popular today, with many of their styles being recycled as trends throughout the past couple years and currently.
