It is the time of the year everyone has been waiting for: New York Fashion Week. Several well-known designers, as well as up-and-coming designers, showcase their Fall/Winter RTW or Pre-Fall/Winter 2017 collections during the next month in New York, London, Milan and Paris. Several designers have left quite an impression of trends on the audience and followers. Color, fit and patterns are always cycling through the fashion industry, but the season we are in determines what will be in, and what will be out.

Looking at trends for Fall 2017, there’s an array of colors, patterns, staple pieces and different fits. Taking a quick look into the color palette predicted for Autumn/Winter 17/18, several designers’ collections showcased bold, yet simple colors. The colors start out very neutral with white, cream, tan, brown, grey and black. There is almost always one neutral color making an appearance on every runway. Whether it is a coat, pants, shoes or a bag, camel is the neutral color for this coming fall season. Other colors that repeatedly showed up were different shades of yellow, orange, red, maroon, blue and green. A neutral color palette with a pop of orange, green or purple will be the most used colors this fall.

Marc Jacobs’ collection featured a majority of these colors, adding a pop of color to his collection. These colors were displayed in a multitude of fashion, such as color blocking, patterns and metallic. Color blocking was also spotted in Calvin Klein’s collection on numerous tops with a solid color block on each sleeve or a different color on the pockets of his shirts.

Monochromatic styles seem to be a trend that a copious amount of designers feel is essential for this fall. Kenzo, Ulla Johnson, Alexander Wang, Kanye West and Tibi were just some designers who had several monochromatic looks throughout their collections. Kanye West’s collection had several monochrome looks featuring different fabrics and shades of the same color, as well.

Various patterns made their way down the runway, such as Tommy Hilfiger’s disparate stripe combinations featuring his iconic logo in red, white and blue. Throughout his collection, he offered mix and match striped tops, skirts and even bathing suits. Pinstripe was highlighted throughout the collections of Tibi and Club Monaco. Other patterns include small and big floral prints seen in matching sets. Coach’s collection occupied different plaid prints layered on top of one another or separated, while Kanye West featured real and digital camo on oversized pants and jackets.

There are plenty of cut and fit options that will be available this season. Longline is one that was shown in almost every designer’s collection. Coats, jackets and cardigans are all the main apparel items that are longline. Another fit style noticed is oversized tops, bottoms and even jackets/coats. Oversized pairs well with longline apparel due to the layering needed for the fall/winter season. The oversized trend doesn’t just take on one look; specific collections utilized oversized clothing in completely different ways. High neck lines featuring either an open shoulder or one shoulder options were one example shown throughout RTW fall dresses and sweaters. Tibi’s collection featured abounding funnel neck sweaters and tops for a different take on the classic turtleneck.

For bottoms, many designers featured culottes, which hit below the knee and have a looser fit with a flare. Several designers showcased these pants with matching sets, oversized tops or longline jackets. Culottes were seen throughout Dion Lee, Francesca Liberatore, Tibi, Zac Posen and Club Monaco’s collections. Midi and maxi skirts is another recurring style seen in Michael Kor’s collection.

Aside from colors and cuts, another favored trend is patches, patches and more patches. Any form of denim, utility style jackets and purses are patched, as well as sweaters with patching details on the chest or sleeves. A few designers who displayed this are Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Nicole Miller, Jeremy Scott, Rebecca Minkoff and even Banana Republic on their white denim. The use of embellishment was featured on tulle skirts, tops and of course, couture dresses. Designers such as Jason Wu, Rachel Zoe and Francesca Liberatore used embellishment on a few of their garments throughout their collections.

There’s no point in knowing the trends if you don’t know how and where to shop for them on a budget, of course. First, you have to know what retailers can help you score your looks. Several designers offer their collections in stores like Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Lord & Taylor. These are the best places to start when finding designer looks on a budget; they often have sales or discounted designer items.

After shopping around at big name retailers, fast fashion retailers are the next stop. Zara, Topshop and H&M are some of the top fast fashion companies. As the trends are seen on the runway, they will be sold at these retailers within a few weeks. For even more discounted designer clothing, look into Nordstrom Rack and Saks off Fifth, or a designer that has collaborations with a retailer. WhoWhatWear recently collaborated with Target, and trends like track pants, culottes and oversized tops spotted in NYFW are currently being sold in every store.
