“Priscilla,” the 2023 Sofia Coppola A24 film took on a new version of the story of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. It was based on the real story from a book called “Elvis & Me” by the woman who really lived it, Priscilla Presley. The wife, the doll and the prize of the king of rock and roll. Elvis and Priscilla have gone down in history as, arguably, the royals of America. For years, all heads were turned to them and Elvis’ career, but now the heads turned to Priscilla specifically. The film details the trials and tribulations of their relationship, but also how she’s coped with growing up so quickly and wanting to finally live freely later in her life.
Being that Priscilla was involved with Elvis at the young age of 14, and Presley being 10 years older than her, the dynamics of their relationship have been called into question by the public countless times. Elvis’ influence was so great on everyone, but especially on Priscilla. Even in the smallest aspects, such as her wardrobe. He only liked her in solid colors, no prints because it “took away from her figure,” and no jeans, because it reminded him of growing up poor. He also wanted her to display an image of dark bold eyeliner, false lashes and dark teased hair as high and wide as it can get.
The influence of her look still resonates with so many in pop culture today, most prominently her look is an obvious inspiration for Lana Del Rey. Priscilla’s young innocence, and her undying love for Elvis, made her feel like his perfect little doll, that he could dress up and depend on. Their relationship however did not reflect the pristine and flawless persona that Priscilla projected. From the outside looking in, she always looked perfect– just as Elvis liked her.
