Is music taste a dating dealbreaker? To some people, the answer is an obvious yes. In a way, music is a language, and the kind of music that someone listens to can say a lot about who they are.
Imagine you are getting into the car with someone on the first date and they start playing a certain genre of music you absolutely cannot stand. Do you feel turned off by this person or does it not affect you?
Since ancient Greece, philosophers such as Plato have referred to music as the “medicine of the soul.” Everything from the lyrics, rhythm and beat speaks to someone and makes them feel a certain way.
According to Karsen Movsesian, a student at Kent State University, “music has such a deeper meaning if you really think about it that way.” Often, the music someone listens to reflects their mood and emotions and allows them to connect with how they feel on a deeper and more personal level.
Music can be a way to break the ice and get to know more about someone without having to get super personal. Music often expresses what someone may not be able to put into words.
This is why making mixtapes for one’s significant other in the ‘80s was so popular. Generation Z has brought this sensation back by curating playlists for their significant others. The art of curating playlists with songs that describe how one feels has turned music into a love language.
Movesesian also feels that music is a common interest that can be shared. She prefers listening to rap and rock and would want her partner to listen to the same. She also voiced that if she were to talk to someone who has the complete opposite taste in music than her, it could be a turn-off.
Having similar music tastes adds a level of comfort and makes it easier for people to connect. It has been proven that music is linked to strengthening bonds whether they are social or family. It has also been proven that music spikes dopamine levels which can make moments where music was present memorable.
Movesesian also believes that “music coincides with someone’s vibe.” She believes that if someone listens to country music and that country is their overall aesthetic, she would not vibe with that. She stressed that it is more attractive when someone listens to similar music as her.
It is also important for the person someone is talking to have a broader music taste. Movesesian believes that when someone listens to more than one type of music, they can be more open-minded. Dating someone who is opposed to listening to their partner’s favorite music would not make for a fun relationship.
While it is possible to date someone who has the complete opposite taste in music, it might help to share some similarities. Music will not make or break a relationship, but it is an important factor to consider when deciding if someone is right for you.
