School spirit, especially at colleges in America, is a powerful and unifying feeling of belonging. This can be expressed through events, traditions in the community and achievements at the school that are led with enthusiasm. Now, it’s no secret that Kent State isn’t exactly the most athletics-oriented school. However, even when the football team is underperforming, seeing such unity and pride amongst the student body is never a bad thing.
School spirit is a dynamic expression of belonging, and overall, creates a positive campus culture. Most of the time, we see an excessive amount of school spirit enhanced through athletic games, however, the impact of school spirit extends way beyond the surface of the college experience.
I think one of the most powerful exhibitions of camaraderie is through the clothing worn by people around campus. As I walk around Kent State every day, I see an assortment of Kent State branded crewnecks, t-shirts, sweatshirts and sweatpants worn by students, faculty and even alumni. I think that one of my favorite times of year to see students show their school pride is during football games, specifically the home opener and homecoming days.
“As a fashion student, I love repping my blue and gold on game days. Wearing a Kent State jersey or sweatshirt makes me feel proud to be a Golden Flash,” said sophomore fashion design major Maddie McElwee.
Some of my favorite places to acquire Kent State spirit wear include the bookstore and a collection of clothing stores downtown. Branded in Kent has a nice selection of vintage Kent and Ohio based clothing, while Kent Sportswear goes for a more modern gameday look, with the official shop of the Kent State athletic teams.
I have lived very close to Kent since I was a kid, so I have always known the area and been around the campus. Due to this, I was afraid that going to school here would be hard for me because I would be so close by. While this is a valid fear to have for any freshman living nearby their hometown, I really do think that the place is ultimately what you make it. My freshman year, I made it my mission to not go home every weekend, even when I was homesick.
I would immerse myself in different activities on campus to keep myself occupied, so I never felt bored. One of these things was going to the football games on the weekends, even if it was just my freshman year roommate and I. I really do believe that participating in these activities promotes a sense of emotional well-being and ultimately contributes to a fulfilling college experience.
School spirit is a vibrant feeling that weaves together every college experience. As every institution continues to foster a sense of pride in their community, students feel welcomed in a group that they not only support themselves, but one that supports them right back.
