The spring 2026 runway was overflowing with denim, causing me to wonder if denim is what everyone is going to be raving about this fall. Although the looks seen this past September are trend predictors for the upcoming spring, it’s no lie that these influence the style of the present season.
Denim for fall is nothing out of the ordinary. It’s a timeless look – just think about the “Christian Girl Autumn” phenomena dating back 10 years ago. The trick on rocking denim this fall lies in picking the right silhouette and knowing how to style this fabric.
Collina Strada demonstrated you don’t even have to wear denim to get the iconic look. At NYFW, they showed a breathtaking Ready To Wear garment that almost looked like a denim trench-coat: a floor length baby blue and white checkered coat perfect to keep warm for this cold, Ohioan fall.
A long denim trench coat, or even a vest, is the perfect versatile fall garment to throw over any of your outfits before it gets too cold and you need to wear a parka jacket around campus.
Furthermore, Nicholas Aburn debuted his first collection with Area this past September at NYFW and it is clear that he wasn’t afraid to use denim. Some of his most eye-catching looks include a gorgeous, off-the-shoulder, distressed denim maxi dress, paired with stilettos from the same fabric. The look was shown right after an amazing pair of medium-wash bootcut jeans that seem to be layered under a distressed pair of denim shorts – a genius idea to implement during the transition from summer to fall.
Don’t stop at shorts over jeans, though. The trick to looking chic this fall is to layer everything, and Copenhagen Fashion Week attendees proved just this. Katharina Fuchs said in Glamour that styling a lace skirt over jeans and a sweater curates a “casual and carefree” look, perfect for cozy weather. Just look at how effortlessly cool micro influencer DearBrookes looks wearing jeans this way.
Fuchs recommends pairing this look with slim sneakers for the cooler weather, but, of course, wearing your favorite pair of winter rain boots would go perfect with this look, too. Keep your summer dresses and skirts at school for a little longer and give this trend a try – just don’t forget to be on the lookout for denim trench coats and dresses. You could even find some at your local thrift store!
