Becoming a fashion icon in Northeast Ohio might be one of the biggest challenges your closet ever faces. However, it also allows you to be the biggest maximalist you could ever imagine. Giving you the opportunity to buy clothes for every season. But just know when winter arrives you better hope your closet is prepared with all the essentials, especially your shoes.
Living somewhere where the weather is as unpredictable as Carrie Bradshaw’s love life can get tricky. One day it is 50 degrees and sunny and the next, temperatures plunge below zero. Add wet sidewalks and icy pavement, and suddenly ballet flats are no longer an option. Believe me, I’ve tried.
Choosing the right footwear can make or break a winter outfit. Staying on trend while bundled up is not easy unless you find the perfect boot. In recent years, UGGs have become a go-to winter staple, appearing in the early 2000s. While they are undeniably cozy, there are only so many ways to style them. So what are some good alternatives, you might ask? I have curated the perfect list of my personal 2026 winter faves.
Starting off with Moon Boots. Originally launched in 1979, Moon Boots became a fashion staple in the late 1970s and 1980s before resurfacing in the early 2000s and now are a part of Y2K fashion. Some of the most iconic celebrities, including Dua Lipa and Hailey Bieber, wear them. Available in a wide variety of colors and materials, Moon Boots make a bold statement while offering practical cold-weather protection. Their thick insulation and water resistant design make them ideal for snowy and icy conditions. Styled with oversized outerwear or baggy pants they create a fashionable and functional winter look.
Next on my list are SOREL ONA AVE Alpine Women’s Waterproof Boot. While SOREL offers a wide selection of winter footwear for both men and women, this particular design stands out for its modern silhouette. The boot features faux fur trim and 100 grams of insulation, which helps trap heat without adding excessive bulk. Aside from their laces and zippers, the design is fully waterproof, making it practical for slushy sidewalks and snowy commutes.
Yes, UGGS makes the list but with a refined update. These water-resistant suede healed boots offer a polished alternative to the brand’s classic styles. Perfect for dressing up this season or even just as a business casual alternative. They come in the colors Chestnut and Sand and go great with a pair of work pants and a blazer. While your typical classic UGGs boots are more susceptible to water and salt stains, this style incorporates water resistant suede and an added heel grip.
Last but not least are the Cole Haan Women’s Lyndon Waterproof boots. Available in both tall and short versions, these seam-sealed leather boots are designed specifically for fall and winter while remaining versatile enough for year round wear. When paired with fleece lined tights or layered with leg warmers, these could be so cute for a night out. While retail prices typically range around $200 and $300, similar styles at lower price points make the sleek, tall-boot trend achievable for a variety of budgets.
In a region where the weather forecast is rarely predictable, winter footwear must do more than simply look good. The right boots provide protection while still allowing personal style to shine. In Northeast Ohio, practicality and fashion can happen; it just requires the right pair of shoes.
