Vogue has taken a new and interesting approach to interviewing celebrities: interviewing their dogs.
As a nod to the magazine’s past of featuring dogs in archival editions, from Coco Chanel’s Great Dane in 1931 to an 1898 cover featuring a collie named Drumtochty, Vogue launched a digital issue revolving around 16 “celebri-dogs” this past August.
This special project features photoshoots, interviews, stories about designers and their dogs historically, personal essays and information about all things dog.
Instead of Vogue covers, editors opted for Dogue covers, featuring the pets of Demi Moore, Billie Eilish, Sydney Sweeney, Ciara, Mariah Carey, Thom Browne, Ferg, Glen Powell, Anna Wintour, Tim Walz, Missy Eliott and Ayo Edebiri.
Dogs are known to be a reflection of their owners, and this interesting and unique approach to covering celebrities brings out a more personal and grounded side to the stars.
In an interview for The Time, editor of Vogue.com Chloe Malle mentioned how interested and high-energy the celebrities were about participating in this project.
“I have never in 15 years of working with celebrity publicists seen such high enthusiasm and check-in rate about when a shoot would be going live,” Malle said.
Each online edition of Dogue features a different celebri-dog, and each mini-magazine features adorable photography, videography and interviews of celebrities about their dogs.
Demi Moore’s Chihuahua, Pilaf, had many fans during her photoshoot, acting like she was born to be in front of the camera. Moore can carry all 1.2 pounds of Pilaf in her Birkin Bag, and she describes how she and her dog are attached at the hip.
Billie Eilish and her rescue Pit Bull, Shark, also spend a lot of time together. Eilish described how she loves to take him to the studio, and how he even spent some time on stage with her during her last tour.
“He’s good with loud noises and overstimulation, he couldn’t care less,” Eilish said.
Some dogs, like Glen Powell’s pup, Brisket, relish in the spotlight and attend movie premieres alongside their owners. Others, like Thom Browne’s dachshund, Hector, enjoy more of a quiet life at home, despite barking at anything and everything. Hector loves to wear his gray cashmere sweater and is described as quite the gentleman.
While some interviews were cute and serious, others were comedic and lighthearted, especially Ayo Edebiri and her chihuahua, Gromit.
Edebiri and Gromit make perfect sense together, considering that she talks to him in a normal voice because of his “freakish sense of sentience.”
Each dog featured resembles their owner in some way and offers insight into a side of celebrities usually glossed over. As an extension of the celebrities and their lifestyles, these 16 celebri-dogs all have a unique character and interesting quirks.
