iconic celebrities make a name for themselves in the makeup industry

art by: laura fox

Celebrities continually capture our attention and are often sources of inspiration and affection, whether they spark fashion trends or impact our culture in some way. Today, our celebrity driven world has taken emulating idols to a new level as many famous entertainers and influencers have entered the makeup world with their own beauty brands.

In the past, so many people wanted to smell like Elizabeth Taylor or learn Marilyn Monroe’s beauty secrets. Now, Kim Kardashian’s skincare routine is a click away and numerous famous personalities have marketed original perfumes to cater to those who dream of smelling like a star.

This celebrity influence on our culture, and especially the beauty industry, has strengthened over the years which is evident in the surge of makeup brands such as Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty, Lady Gaga’s Haus Laboratories, Millie Bobby Brown’s Florence by Mills and Selena Gomez’s newly announced Rare Beauty.

Rihanna, musician and actress, launched Fenty Beauty in 2017 and quickly became one of Sephora’s best sellers and even one of Time’s 25 Best Inventions of 2017. Her inclusive foundation line and glittering highlighters won over makeup lovers everywhere and guaranteed Fenty Beauty a spot in makeup history.

With 40 foundation shades and an ever increasing inventory of products, Rihanna’s brand has continued to satisfy her fans and her customers alike. While her fame initially drew attention to her brand, Rihanna’s impact has been especially strong on the makeup community and she has proven herself to be a powerful and successful businesswoman.

Lady Gaga, another famous musician and actress turned makeup mogul, launched Haus Laboratories in 2019. She champions self acceptance and expressing one’s authentic personality, which is reflected in her company’s message that says “beauty is how you see yourself.”

Lady Gaga is known for her daring and outrageous outfits, and her makeup line is no different as it does not shy away from embracing bold looks. From sparkling liquid eye shimmer to brightly colored lipsticks, Haus Laboratories has everything you need for a striking makeup look.

Millie Bobby Brown, “Stranger Things” actress, also recently introduced her own beauty brand called Florence by Mills. As one of the youngest major makeup brand owners at just 15 years old, Brown’s line is specifically geared towards younger generations.

Florence by Mills focuses on highlighting one’s features rather than covering them up, which is seen through the no-makeup makeup look that many of Brown’s products aim to achieve. This line has a light, natural aura to it with products like her Like a Light Skin Tint ($18) and Cheek Me Later Cream Blush ($14) that leave your skin glowing and lively.

Another new celebrity addition to the makeup world is Selena Gomez, who will launch Rare Beauty this summer. Available exclusively at Sephora, Gomez’s brand also advocates for self acceptance and embracing your own unique, rare beauty.

While Gomez has yet to announce specific products and prices, her launch video shows her testing lipstick and concealer shades, so expect some new additions to the makeup world this summer.

Though the line between the celebrity world and the makeup world has become increasingly blurred, these new brands are changing the game and introducing products that appeal to wider audiences. It used to only be a dream to look like a celebrity, but now with the expansion of these celebrity makeup brands, anyone can rock Rihanna’s shine or Millie Bobby Brown’s youthful glow.
